Weak Wi-Fi at Home or Office? 7 Fixes That Actually Work
If your internet plan is fast but Wi-Fi feels slow, the problem is almost always inside the building. These fixes start free and get more involved.
1. Move the router
Place it high, central and in the open, not inside a cabinet or behind the TV. Thick walls and metal block Wi-Fi.
2. Use the right band
5 GHz is faster but shorter-range; 2.4 GHz reaches further but is slower and more crowded. Use 5 GHz near the router and 2.4 GHz for distant rooms.
3. Change the channel
In apartments, neighbouring networks crowd the same channels. Switching to a less busy channel in the router settings can make a noticeable difference.
4. Restart and update
Restart the router occasionally and update its firmware. Updates fix bugs and security issues.
5. Wire what you can
Desktops, TVs and CCTV recorders work best on a LAN cable, which also frees up Wi-Fi for phones and laptops.
6. Add mesh or access points
In larger homes and multi-floor buildings, one router can't reach everywhere. Mesh Wi-Fi or wired access points extend coverage far better than cheap range extenders.
7. Secure the network
Use a strong password and current encryption so unknown devices aren't using your bandwidth, and give guests a separate network.
