Phone Not Charging? Common Causes and What to Do

Most charging problems come down to four things: the cable, the adapter, the charging port or the battery. Testing them one at a time usually reveals the culprit.

Swap the cable and the adapter

Try a different cable and adapter that you know work. Cables fail inside long before they look damaged, especially near the connector.

Look inside the charging port

Pocket lint packs into the port over time and stops the plug from seating fully. If the cable feels loose or only charges at an angle, the port may need careful cleaning or replacement. Avoid poking it with metal objects.

Restart and check software

A restart clears software glitches that can stop charging. Some phones also pause charging when they get too hot, so let a warm phone cool down first.

Check battery health

If the phone dies at 20–30%, drains quickly or the back is bulging, the battery is worn out. A swollen battery is a safety risk: stop charging it and get it replaced.

Water exposure

Many phones block charging when they detect moisture in the port. Let it dry completely, and if the phone got properly wet, switch it off and have it inspected rather than charging it.
