Laptop Not Turning On? 8 Things to Check Before a Repair

A laptop that won't start is stressful, but the cause is often simpler than a dead motherboard. Work through these checks in order. If none of them helps, you'll at least be able to tell the technician exactly what you've already tried.

1. Check the charger and the socket

Plug the charger into a different wall socket and look for the charging light on the laptop. Check the cable for cuts or bent pins. A faulty adapter is one of the most common reasons a laptop seems dead.

2. Let a drained battery recover

A deeply drained battery may need 20–30 minutes on the charger before the laptop responds. Leave it connected, then try again.

3. Do a hard reset

Unplug the charger, hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain leftover power, then reconnect the charger and switch on. On laptops with a removable battery, take the battery out first.

4. Is it off, or is the screen just dark?

Listen for the fan and look for keyboard or power lights. If the laptop is running but the screen is black, connect an external monitor or TV. If the picture appears there, the problem is the display, its cable or the backlight, not the whole laptop.

5. Remove everything that's plugged in

Disconnect USB drives, external disks, docks and memory cards. A faulty accessory can stop a laptop from starting.

6. Watch for beeps or blinking lights

Many laptops signal faults with a pattern of beeps or blinking charging lights. Note the pattern; it helps a technician narrow down whether the problem is the RAM, the battery or the board.

7. Think about what happened before

A drop, a spill, a power surge or a recent update all point in different directions. Liquid damage is urgent: keep the laptop switched off and don't charge it.

8. Signs you need a technician

  • No charging light with a known-good charger
  • A burning smell or a laptop that gets hot while off
  • Liquid spilled on the keyboard
  • Lights come on but nothing appears, even on an external screen
