Reinstalling Windows? A Checklist Before You Start
A clean Windows installation can fix a slow, unstable computer, but it erases installed programs and settings. Ten minutes of preparation saves hours afterwards.
1. Back up your files
Copy Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Pictures and any work folders to an external drive or cloud storage. Check that the backup opens before you continue.
2. Save passwords and bookmarks
Sign in to your browser's sync or export bookmarks and saved passwords. Make sure you know your email, Microsoft account and other important passwords.
3. Check your Windows licence
Most laptops have a licence built into the hardware, and Windows activates automatically after reinstalling. If your licence is linked to a Microsoft account, sign in after installation to activate.
4. Note your software and licence keys
- Office and accounting software
- Antivirus subscriptions
- Printer and scanner software
- Any paid tools your work depends on
5. Get drivers ready
Download the network (Wi-Fi or LAN) driver for your model from the manufacturer's website and keep it on a USB drive, so you can get online straight after installation.
6. Prepare the installer
Create a bootable USB installer with Microsoft's official tool, using a USB drive of 8 GB or more.
